The curriculum involves 1500 hours to satisfy New Hampshire state requirements. The course includes extensive instruction and practical experience in cutting, hair coloring, perming, customer service, personal appearance and hygiene, personal motivation and development, retail skills, client record keeping, business ethics, sanitation, state laws and regulations, salon-type administration, and job interviewing.
*Graduate’s are prepared to become an entry level cosmetologist.
This program is taught in English. Textbooks and Course Materials are only offered in the English Language.
COSMETOLOGY COURSE OVERVIEW
Course Hours: 1500 clock hours
The course is divided into pre-clinical classroom instruction and clinical service learning experiences.
- Pre-clinical Classroom Instruction: The first 210 hours are devoted to classroom workshops where students learn design principles, technical information, and professional practices.
- Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: The remaining 1290 hours are spent in the classroom clinic area where practical experience is gained.
COSMETOLOGY COURSE OUTLINE
Your time at Paul Mitchell the School Portsmouth for the cosmetology program will be divided into six designations:
- Core Curriculum: A 280 hour orientation, known as the Core program, instills the basic fundamentals. Students are graded and evaluated using written, oral, and practical testing methods. Students must successfully complete the Core curriculum prior to attending regularly scheduled daily classes in cutting, coloring, permanent waving, and chemical texture services.
- Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: Your clinic classroom time from 280 to 1500 hours will be guided with individual attention and group learning experiences using mini-classes, clinic classroom worksheets, and periodic evaluations developed specifically for this monitoring progress. This is when you begin experiencing your clinic classroom education on paying clients in the clinic classroom area.
- Classroom Learning Experience: Your classroom time from 280 to 1500 hours is divided into five (5) areas: cutting, coloring, texture, makeup, and nails. Each area has an instructor who conducts the different specialty classes each week. Classroom Learning Experiences may also include retail, motivation, self improvement, professional development, and attendance education which may be conducted by an instructor, non-licensed staff member or guest artist.
- Adaptive Curriculum: From 280 to 750-900 hours you will enter a new phase of specialty classroom workshops coupled with challenging practical services designed to continue building you into a beauty industry professional.
- Creative Curriculum: You will spend your last 750-900 to 1500 hours at Paul Mitchell the School Portsmouth in “high gear” by dressing, acting, and working like a beauty industry professional. You will use your own artistic and creative abilities, coupled with the assistance of the Learning Leaders, to prepare yourself for your future beauty industry career.

Hairstyling | This course teaches the techniques and basics of pin curls, finger waves, thermal hairstyles, shampoo sets, braids, flat iron, and marcel curls. |
Hair Shaping | This course teaches the proper way to hold shears, razors, and combs while performing a haircut; how to perform a haircut; guidelines for achieving the desired style; and men’s haircutting. |
Hair Coloring | This course teaches techniques in temporary, semi-permanent and permanent hair coloring, the chemistry of hair color, and the classification of hair color. |
Permanent Waving | This course teaches perm wrapping techniques, perm chemistry, the different types of perms, and product use and safety. |
Hair Analysis and Scalp Treatment | This course teaches how to analyze a guest's hair, scalp manipulation, hair treatments, and product use and safety. |
Facial and Waxing including Contra-Indications | This course teaches facial manipulations, including chemical procedure treatments and cosmetics, skin types, waxing, and makeup application. |
Manicuring and Pedicuring | This course teaches how to manicure, pedicure, and perform a nail extension; proper sanitation of implements; and how to properly set up the station for a service. |
Bacteriology, Safety, and Sanitation | This course teaches the proper ways to sanitize implements. It also reviews the types of bacterium, covers the Pivot Point chapters on sanitation and disinfection, and teaches the causes of HIV and AIDS. |
Personal Development | This course teaches professional guidelines, parking, student kits, what is expected during training, and ethics in the beauty industry. |
Business Management and Salesmanship | This course teaches job interviewing, workforce professionalism, business and personal improvement, compensation package, and payroll deductions. |
State Law and Rules | This course teaches the New Hampshire state laws and regulations in the field of cosmetology. |
(Pivot Point) Textbook Theory | This course will take you through the entire Pivot Point Textbook with in-depth discussions, quizzes, and exams. |
Sculptured Nails | This course will teach the proper procedures and sanitation for sculptured nails, nail tips, nail wraps, and gel application. |
Reflexology and Massage | This course will teach you the basic reflexology and massage as it relates to cosmetology, manicuring, and pedicuring services. |
COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM TESTING AND GRADING PROCEDURE
The following tests and grading procedures are incorporated during the student’s 1500 hour course:
- Academic theory exams: Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on each assigned theory exam.
- Core written and practical skill exams: Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on each written exam and each practical skill exam in order to complete the Core program. The exams are an overview of instruction taught during the Core schedule. All Core written and practical skill exams must be passed with a 75% in order to transition to the Clinic Classroom. If students are unable to pass each exam after two attempts, the student may be asked to withdraw from the program and re-enroll in the next available Core class start date.
- Final exam 1 (approximately 750 hour written test): This test covers an overview of all related cosmetology subjects (e.g., anatomy, chemistry, etc.). Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on all final exams.
- Final exam 2 (approximately 1300 hour written test): The written exam covers an overview of all theory instruction, New Hampshire state law, and other items covered on the state cosmetology exam. Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on all final exams.
- Clinic Practical Skill Assessments: Students progress in practical skill assessments and theory hours will be digitally monitored on a weekly basis by the Future Professional Advisor using Course Key app. All assigned practical skill assessments must be completed in order to complete the program.
- New Hampshire State Board Exams: The written and practical exam covers an overview of New Hampshire state law, and other items covered on the state cosmetology exam. Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on all final exams.
COSMETOLOGY INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES AND METHODS
The cosmetology 1500 hour course are provided through a sequential set of learning steps which address specific tasks necessary for State Board preparation, graduation and job entry level skills. Clinic equipment, implements and products are comparable to those used in the industry. Each student will receive instruction that relates to the performance of useful, creative and productive career oriented activities. The course is presented through well-developed lesson plans that reflect the latest educational methods. Subjects are presented by means of lecture, demonstration, and student participation. Audio-visual aids, guest speakers, field trips, and other related learning methods are used in the course.
